At the most recent Green Drinks, which was held at the Diesel Lounge on State Street in New Haven last Wednesday, Sept. 17, representatives from the New Haven Land Trust discussed the growth in the number of the organization’s community gardens from three in 1991 to 50 today, including gardens at Barnard School and Fairmont Park.
Land Trust president Chris Randall The gardens provide fresh, locally grown food and help make neighborhoods more attractive. The Land Trust offers assistance and resources to anyone wishing to create a community garden in their neighborhood, including technical assistance, and structural improvements. Board member J.R. Logan discussed the Land Trust’s efforts to create and maintain natural areas and other open space efforts.
Board member Anika Singh Lemar discussed the celebration of Roger Chapman’s donation of Grannis Island this Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at Martin’s Riverside Restaurant. Singh Lemar said the island offered untouched wetlands on an important archeological site.
